Underground Music

House music was bubbling in the underground music scenes of New York and Chicago before it “broke through”. But it was developing for six or seven years before journalists discovered what was happening and then started writing about it.

The same happened with Bebop in the 1940s. There was no radio in America throughout World War 2. All the while, Charlie Parker and the lads were creating incredible music, unrecorded. When the war ended, Bebop “broke through”.

I love thinking about this because I wonder about what kind of music is simmering under the surface at the moment. There could be a whole new genre of music happening right under our noses and we don’t know about it. And then one day it will be everywhere. And it will be like nothing we ever heard.

I wonder what’s next.
